A to Z Challenge: R is for Ranellidae…

The Ranellidae, common name the triton shells or tritons, are a taxonomic family of small to very large predatory sea snails, marinegastropod mollusks in the clade Littorinimorpha. (Wiki) 

Some of the beautiful examples I have found around the Arabian coastline…..

Cymatium (Cymatium) ranzanii. Found in Gulf of Oman, Masirah, Southern Oman…this specimen is 150mm.
Cymatium (Lotoria) perryi, 120mm, found in the Gulf of Oman..largest size on these is 120mm..
Cymatium (Lotoria) grandimaculatum. Found on Masirah island, Oman, up to 60mm.
Cymatium (Ranularia) obeosum. Found in Gulf of Oman and Masirah island. Up to 50mm.
Cymatium (Ranularia) trilineatum.Found in the Northern Gulf, South-east Gulf,Gulf of Oman and Masirah island. Up to 65mm.
Cymatium (Septa) rubeculum rubeculum.Found in North-West Gulf and Masirah island.Up to 40mm.
Cymatium (Turritriton) labiosum.Found in Gulf of Oman, Masirah island and South Oman. Up to 35mm.
Cymatium (Monoplex) aquatile. Found in Gulf of Oman, Masirah island, South Oman. Up to 80mm.
Possibly a juvenile Cymatium ranzanii.
Linatella (Gelagna)n.sp. Found in Gulf of Oman and Masirah island. Up to 40mm.
This beauty is a Triton Charonia, not found around the Arabian peninsula. 315mm in size, its habitat is in the Indo-pacific region and beyond. It iis a carnivore and is a predator of the Crown of Thorns starfish which decimate coral reefs. This one was found at the Northern tip of Borneo.

    • Thanks Carrie-Anne for visiting, Seashell collecting figures highly in my free time and this region allows me to indulge…I have some found some wonderful beached specimens, which usually figure in some post !!
